Why so much rush for GPS?

Recently we are seeing larger companies scrambling to acquire GPS technology companies.

Uber being in taxi services seems logical to acquire Nokia's HERE as part of their strategy to lessen their reliance on Google. However, Uber is being thwarted by German car manufacturing companies who are also eyeing to acquire HERE.

Apple on the other hand is acquiring Coherent Navigation who is supposed to provide more accurate maps. In the past, Apple has acquired Placebase in 2009, and Locationary and Hopstop in 2013. Apple has always wanted to get away from Google Maps and have its own location technology.

Considering GPS in general, is Google Map not enough? I can definitely see that Google's rivals want to get away from Google's dominance in GPS technology. But is that the only reason? Looking at it more minutely, GPS is going to be a key factor in the Internet-of-Everything world. In future, we may see more companies coming up with newer GPS technologies empowering their devices.

I would think autonomous cars are behind it. I'm really looking forward to not driving. It really is crazy out there! San Francisco, Silicon Valley, pretty much all of California.

You need better than standard software to accurately determine your position inside the canyons of tall buildings you find in a city.

Worst comes worst, do we trust computers to help us to make decision while driving or even drive the car for us? I'd say I trust computers more than human beings. I have seen or heard too many tragedies caused by human drivers due to the drivers are too young, too old, got distraction, too stupid, looking for excitement, or simply made a mistake. There are just too many blind spots for a human driver while driving.

Very rightly said. The day when all cars are driven by computers without any driver, we will have no accidents. It could be more chaotic if the situation is such that the roads are mixed with driverless and with driver cars. Not sure when we can see the roads without any drivers though.
