I had a demo of Virtual Reality at the DAC trade show in 2014 but was underwhelmed by the experience because it was low resolution, had significant lag, and just didn't deliver a comfortable presence for me.
Cost is reduced when volume is increased, which happens when multiple companies compete for the same, growing business.
They also need to supply compelling software to attract us to put on a VR headset and use a desktop PC.
Lag is surely critical for VR , but i think occulus and maybe others have solved it.
Also, last i heard both occulus and htc have created very appealing products. But in any case ,it's early and there's a whole industry working on that problem.
As for cost and volume - don't pc's and gpu's run at such a large volume that even increasing it won't improve the financials ?
I'd love to see a recent demo of Occulus to feel what the lag is like now.
The challenge with desktop PCs is that the unit volumes are now decreasing in favor of mobile devices, phablets and tablets. Gamers and the scientific community love to buy high-end GPUs, but not so much the mainstream.
