HSINCHU, Taiwan – December 15, 2020 – Realtek Semiconductor Corp. (Taiwan Stock Exchange: 2379.TW), one of the world’s leading IC providers, today announced that Realtek won the 2020 Hsinchu Science Park R&D Accomplishment Award, and its world smallest form factor & lowest power 2.5G USB Ethernet controller (RTL8156B) won the Innovative Product Award.
The R&D Accomplishment Award and the Innovative Product Award were established by the Hsinchu Science Park Bureau. The awards aim to encourage companies within the Science Park to engage in research and development, new product development, obtaining patents, protecting technology achievements, enhancing competitiveness, and promoting industry development. The R&D Accomplishment Award focuses on R&D resource investment and R&D innovation achievements, while the Innovative Product Award focuses on new products in terms of innovation, technology creativity, and market competitiveness.
Realtek has been committed to research and development since the company was founded, and is a leader in the IC industry with regard to the ratio of R&D personnel to company employee numbers, the ratio of R&D investment to company revenue, academic publications, the amount of patents and their benefits to the company, industry-academy cooperation, and innovation of new products. Comprehensive investment in company R&D activities benefits the rapid development of new products, and the competiveness of new products further boosts the financial performance of the company. Realtek is ranked in the top 10 IC fabless design companies in the first half of 2020 according to TrendForce Fabless 2Q20 Ranking.
Realtek’s Innovative Product Award winning RTL8156B new generation of USB Ethernet controller supports a 2.5Gbps connection speed and meets the power-saving specifications of various platforms and operating systems such as Modern Standby, Energy Star, EuP, and CEC. A major advantage of the RTL8156B is ease of roll-out; the 2.5Gbps speed can be achieved over legacy CAT-5e cabling that is already in place, which is the simplest solution for customers to upgrade their connection speed.
The RTL8156B adopts a QFN56 package with a chip size of 6x6mm. It is the smallest packaged chip among USB 2.5Gbps Ethernet controllers in the market. Its small footprint means it can be used in laptop accessories such as USB dongles or expansion docks. Products utilizing the new RTL8156B will be launched in 2H 2020, and are expected to bring great advantages to our customers in promoting the easy upgrade option to 2.5Gbps speeds over existing CAT-5e network cabling.
“Realtek has consistently developed innovative and well-received products in the years since its establishment”, said Realtek’s Vice President and Spokesman, Yee-Wei Huang. “We are honored to receive the 2020 Hsinchu Science Park R&D Accomplishment Award and Innovative Product Award, and welcome this recognition of Realtek's persistence in product/technology R&D and innovation”.
