Casambi Technologies Oy, a Finnish smart lighting company, has developed a new dual-mode mesh networking solution for lighting. Using the Nordic Semi nRF51822, Casambi claims at least a 5x improvement in mesh network performance using a combination of Bluetooth Smart and proprietary 2.4 GHz.

Essentially, the solution uses Bluetooth Smart to interact with smartphones and tablets, switching to an optimized proprietary radio mode using the 2Mbps raw data rate to communicate directly between enabled devices. This is directly supported on the nRF51822's ARM Cortex-M0 running a dual software stack. The solution is easily integrated into light fixtures and LED bulbs, and pairs using standard Bluetooth Smart techniques.
