I agree that the new hardware movement probably started with the deployment of FPGA chips and includes recent development systems like the affordable Raspberry Pi and Arduino boards with SoC-based processors running some version of Linux. A new wave of DIY engineers are creating some amazing systems, and probably creating new markets.
