I am glad you've enjoyed your visit to Taiwan.
It's, by the way, my home since 1998.
Living next to the Science Park in Hsinchu (translated: new Bamboo) I've seen
the Park growing steadily and in the meantime it's gigantic.
However, there are two more Science based Industrial Parks where e.g. TSMC is located: one in Taichung (Fab 15) and another one in Tainan (Fab 6 and Fab 14). A state-of-the-art High Speed Train connects Taipei in the North with Kaoshiung in the South.

Feel free to contact me prior to your next trip. I'd like to show you around and reveal some of the secrets hidden in those Parks.

A great thread. Both entertaining and stimulating. Looking forward to reading the continuation. Any chance you would consider the UMC-TSMC compatibility?

A lot of people miss this. UMC and TSMC swap employees on a regular basis without mention. UMC has accepted TSMC GDS II since .35m. You cannot take a 28nm design from TSMC to GFI, IBM, or Samsung without significant changes. UMC is the default 2nd source for TSMC 28nm which is a huge opportunity and that is why UMC raised CAPEX.

The semiconductor industry must support second sourcing and TSMC understands this so TSMC and UMC are like brothers.

Should be a blog in itself, I'll get something out next week.

Not exactly agreed ! 2nd source do exist in all industries, but if these 2 companies were like brothers ? why they did not co-work well to cut down the others' market share...
