ARM Update at DAC

John Heinlein from ARM briefed me at DAC exactly one week ago. I love to use my mobile devices (MacBook Pro, iPad and Samsung Galaxy Note II) every day, and many mobile devices are ARM-powered because of the low power consumption, and pervasive eco-system around the architecture. Apple with the MacBook Pro is still Intel-powered, but who knows if Apple will switch one day to an ARM processor in both the MacBook Pro and MacBook Lite product lines.
ARM: AMBA 5, Cortex-A12, Mali, video, POP...

ARM announced several new products at DAC in a number of different spaces. In addition I got invited to a briefing with Simon Segars, 30 days from when he takes over as CEO of ARM. I asked Simon if he expected to make any major changes and he basically said 'no'. ARM's basic strategy in both mobile and now enterprise is coming to fruition. Unlike Brian Krzanich, recently installed as CEO of Intel, ARM doesn't need to make major changes to get into some fast growing markets. ARM is already in mobile, and while Intel has one or two high profile wins (Samsung tablet for example), ARM is currently dominant.
ARM SoC Hardening

Last year at DAC I discovered a physical IP company called DXCorr that competed against giant ARM. This year the company has selected a different direction, so I got caught up with Nirmalya Ghosh, the CEO to hear about the changes.
Sonics, Inc. is one of the leading providers of connectivity IP often referred to as network-on-chip, or NoC. ARM is the leading provider of processor intellectual property (IP). The potential scope of their relationship is huge:
Andes, ARM, Imagination, MIPS

The last session of the day for Linley Mobile was about processors to go into smartphones. One surprise was that there is a core that nobody seems to have heard of since it is only really used in Taiwan up until now, and it is used in several Mediatek chips.

The most "glamorous" processor in a smartphone is the one in the application processor chip (or the one exposed to the apps in an integrated AP+BB chip). However there may be as many as 15 more processors in a smartphone inside things like the GPS, WiFi, power management. These processors are not automatically ARM since the code is purely internal to the chip and is not exposed to the user. It is hard for anyone to win an AP processor from ARM (although Intel is trying) since even on Android

Size: 21.2 KB" class="align_right" />ARM announced today that Warren East, the CEO, would be retiring at the end of June. The new CEO will be Simon Segars, currently President of ARM and the de facto #2 guy. Currently Simon is based in the US and I don't know if he plans to return to Britain or not. But he will live what will inevitably be a lifestyle that involves crossing the Atlantic a lot, no matter which side he picks.

It is interesting that ARM will have a new CEO this year since their big rival in the microprocessor business, Intel, will
